DESCRIPTION

BICNU also known as Consium (India) is used to treat Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and other types of cancer. Its generic name is Carmustine & its manufactured by Emcure in India. The implantable wafer that contains carmustine is used to treat gliomas, which are a type of brain tumor.

It acts as an alkylating agent that can damage DNA to keep the cancer cells from growing. It basically helps to stop cancer cells from growing and causes them to die. Its comes in vial form & dosage of 100 mg.

Dosage Information:

Carmustine injection is in powder form to be added to fluid and injected over at least 2 hours intravenously (into a vein) by a doctor or nurse in a medical office or hospital outpatient clinic. It is usually injected once every 6 weeks. It may also be injected in smaller doses once a day for 2 days in a row every 6 weeks.Your doctor may need to delay your treatment or adjust your dose if you experience certain side effects. It is important for you to inform your doctor how you are feeling during your treatment with carmustine. Consult your pharmacist/ doctor for a copy of the manufacturer's information for the patient.

SIDE EFFECTS

Interactions with other drugs:

Worse side effects on the blood cells (see "Precautions") have been noticed when carmustine was given with cimetidine (Tagamet). Any drugs or supplements that interfere with blood clotting can raise the risk of bleeding during treatment with carmustine. These include:

Vitamin E
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), and many others
warfarin (Coumadin)
ticlopidine (Ticlid)
clopidogrel (Plavix)

Please Note that many cold, flu, fever, and headache remedies contain aspirin or ibuprofen. Ask your pharmacist if you aren't sure what is in the medicines you take.

Common Side-Effects Include:

  • low white blood cell count with increased risk of infection
  • low platelet count with increased risk of bleeding
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • loss of appetite
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • pain along vein while the drug is being given
  • irritation of vein used for giving the drug
  • fetal abnormalities if pregnancy occurs while taking this drug
